Default My very first hoggie!

A friend of mine got him at a show on December 12th and he ate the first time she fed him, but hasn't eaten since. She has been worried about him and felt that he might better be in someone elses care because he also hisses a lot and strikes and she is more comfortable with more docile snakes. I traded my big kinky black milk for him. I know he'll be well cared for.

So now I have a hoggie! I'll give him a few days and see if I can get him to eat. He is so cute!!!

(He is about 16" long. I don't know how old he is.)

Nice little hog! If only they get little bit bigger... If you have any problem with him you can contact Jenea she is the hogg queen. I haven't seen her here for a while but I am sure she still reads the forums from time to time.

Cool looking hoggie there! Male, right? Males are more fussy about eating than females. Another thing about hoggies...when they strike out in aggression, it's almost always with a closed mouth!

A 16" male hoggie is just about full grown. They don't get much bigger than that...maybe 24". Males are smaller than females. Your little guy could be 2-5 years old. He's definitely older than 2.

Thanks everone!

I am not into the smaller snakes, normally, but these guys seem so cool. I just might get a female for him next year. Right now we are down to having to let something go in order to get something new because there is just no more space for cages.

Well, he has no trouble at all eating! He is putting away hopper mice like there's no tomorrow, which puts my mind at ease.

He is frequently striking and hissing, but my oldest son finds it so endearing that he holds him all the time. For all his theatrics he is a good snake and I am happy to have him.

You will notice him hit or miss on his feeding, especially in the coming months (breeding season). Tricks to entice him if he goes a while without eating a) Smaller than normal food item or b) brain the food item. Either seem to peek their interest. Also, they really like movement, so a little twitching with the forceps works to. For some reason, mine get vicious if they feel like their food might be "getting away:

Thank you Jenea!

He has definitely started a new interest in my home. My oldest boy is just in love with him and I feel that soon we will be buying a new rack just for hogs...

A quick question for you, though. How often should he be eating at 16"? I have been giving him a hopper mouse every Saturday, but is that too much? Should I switch to every other week? I don't want him to be overweight.

I offer mine food once a week. There are plenty of weeks they refuse, so I do not think you have to worry. Just moniter his weight, if he starts looking a little "fluffy" then cut back a little. So far the only hoggies around here on diets are the tricolors, never had issues with the westerns.
