Native to indonesia, found in and around rice paddies. They are a burrowing snake, which spends most of their time under ground.

Their common name comes from the irridescence of their scales. They scatter color like a prism, when a bright artificial light is shown on them.

Sunbeam snakes are dark brown, almost black, in color with a ventral color of white or cream. Juveniles have a white collar that fades and is gone within the first year.

The average size is 3 feet, but can range from 2 to 4 feet.

These snakes stress easily, and enjoy solitude. They should only be handled when absolutely necessary.

sunbeam snakes have a very strong feeding response and eat their prey extremely fast. Prey items include: amphibians, lizards, small mammals, and other snakes.

This species is cannibalistic and should be houses individually.

Heat gradient should be between 70 and 80* F and a hot spot of 86 to 88*F.

Humidity should be between 80 and 90%. Sunbeam snakes can develope skin blisters if humidity is to low. To remidy this you must keep the humidity level quite high.

These snakes love to soak and so it is necessary to keep a large bowl of fresh water for them.

Spagum moss or peat moss can be used as substraite and part should be kept damp at all times. The substraite should be 6 or more inches deep.
