Kupono, a 6 1/2 year-old male turtle, made his way into the ocean from Makapuu Beach several days ago, Sea Life Park revealed Thursday. Kupono was outfitted with a satellite tag, allowing marine biologist George Balazs with the National Marine Fisheries Service to track his movement. Kupono also has a radio frequency identification tag in his left rear flipper in case he is again handled by human researchers.
Kupono was hatched at the park in 1998 and transferred six months later to the Dallas World Aquarium, where the staff unaccountably called him Clyde. After his return to Hawaii in January for release into the Pacific, his original Hawaiian name was restored as his official National Marine Fisheries Service release and tracking name.
"We are proud to be part of this program," said Sea Life Park General Manager Renato Lenzi. "By keeping track of these turtles, we are able to learn more about these incredible animals, and hopefully prevent these threatened creatures from becoming endangered."
All nine of the sea turtles hatched at Sea Life Park have been lent out to aquariums and zoos for educational purposes with the understanding that they would be returned for release after reaching adulthood.
Sea Life Park recently went under new ownership and its actual full name now is Sea Life Park by Dolphin Discovery.
