He's just beautiful!

And it isn't being stupid that he bit you for that reason...it shows how much you love your reptiles that you'll sacrifice your own flesh to make sure they are happy......yeah, that's it.

Not sure I would call that a "sweet and innocent" face either. He looks to be of some size. Nice boa, columbian?

He is an ok size columbian. He isn't as big as he should be, because he has been on and off feed since Oct. He thinks he needs to hook up with one of the girls  But he is big enough to make it hurt thats for sure.

I'm sure he is. The pet store that I'm about to start working at has a baby columbian, around 14-18"...but they want waaayyyy too much for 'em..$180 bucks!

I hope you didn't think I was talking about your boa. I was just referring to the one the pet store had for sale..not looking worth the price tag.

I admit, I was once a sap in buying from petstores like Petsmart. I was once lost, but now I'm found! I try to always deal with the breeders directly to cut out that insane "middle-man" fee. It's the only way the little guys like us can afford to obtain a herp collection of some variety.

I know this is gonna sound all wrong. I'm really not supporting pet stores but I do know a thing or two about the business.

One thing we commonly forget is, these stores have very large overhead costs! It has to be evulated and compensated into every item, it's called mark up! A private breeder or even a commercial breeder has overhead but not nearly to the extent of a store front retail establishment!

Yes, sometimes it is rather extreme and no I dont advocate crappy pet stores that don't care for their animals and have little to no knowledge about them.

Truth be known, we are of a minority here. We know more than the average single snake or gecko owner. Yes, this information is available to everyone with internet access but honestly not everyone cares like we do or even wants more than one or a huge collection!

Just a little insight to the biz...

ok ill admit it. i am a rep sales person. buta good one atleast. and in a decent chain too. and i think it's a beautiful thing. imean come on whats a little blood between soul mates right? loss of flesh to your snake is like an initation right isint it?
i have to whole heartedly agree with you all on two points, stores overcharge like crazy. the markup is ridiculous! and im more than a little let down by the lack of pics. carnage like that caught on camera is what makes this so much fun. our new tokay took off a chunk of my lip today and no body seemed to have a digital handy. well was my face red!
everybody makes mistakes man. kissing lizards was mine today. more than once.

No doubt Quigs...but when markup is 150%, don't u agree that's a little bit ridiculous? To make matters worst, the conditions that they keep the animals in are absurd. Pretty much, regardless of how long those animals stay in those too small tanks, they want the same outrageous money. It seems to me, if something ain't moving, reduce the price and get it outta there to at least stop having to care and feed it and cut your loses.

yeah, the tanks are small is another thing....

I understand the need to markup...I've sold crocheted hats to stores and they usually automatically double the price...I sell the for $20 to stores...$25 or $30 myself or for consignment...I've gotten checks from a couple consignment places which means that people have paid $50, $60 for them which at least means they're good lol

also, there aren't reptile shows by everyone and not everyone knows about them...that's why I mentioned corns and beardeds in particular...they seem to be the most crazy marked up

we have nice sized tanks, i purchase all the eats my self, not store costing crap. all fresh organic and yummy. i even buy the insects out of my own pocket so the owner dosent bitch about the overhead. it's a small price to pay i figure for some fat and happy beasties. i even attempt to find them all good homes by quick screening the buyers and printing up everyones care sheets off the great alexhue library and giving specific instructions and my phone # if theres probs. ive even been known on quite a few ocasions to purchase the guys back to override the store owners lame no refund policy. yeah i know shamless self promotion is a mother. but come on. there arent any good rep shops that are hiring around here that i know of. and rescue dosent pay my rent and put yet another pair of expensive shoes in my wifes closet. ask kiote about my shop. she frequents it for the employee discount her daughter so lovingly gives her.
and yes the overhead is outragous. i agree. i know how much we pay for these guys at store cost and i am attempting to talk the owner into letting me go to shows and do our purchasing outright to help bring our cost down. p.s. if anybody is looking to open a kick but store with the hardest working(i punch out and do 20hrs+ for free a week right now after my 40) coolest girl in the world let me know. :)
