I see you're going the naturalistic route. Is there a lot of foliage in their cage or just around the branch?

Not a lot, just enough to add some color and bring out his colors. Gives him something to invetigate! :D

I know that's a boa, and excuse my ignorance, but is that a columbian, or what?

Yep, he's a columbian!

Thought he looked like he was from the DC area :D  .

Personally, I prefer the Colombian boas. :) :o

Nice. How's his temperment? I am getting into snakes, already getting a 5 lot of balls from Alex in April; and I am interested in boas, and I know that get strong and large, but I don't want to get anything besides an Emerald of course; that's going to bite my every chance it gets.

He's good, boas are usually good!

Let me guess, when they're not good they're similar to Satan?

All our South American boas are great. Even our babies from last spring were really sweet. Every once in a while, one would cop an attitude, but that was not common at all.

Central American boas are a whole different story. Our Nicaraguans, Cay Caulkers, Sonorans, and non-locality CAs have all been total pills. They get better with age, but have a lot of spunk as youngsters.

Are either of you guys dealing with Argentines? And also, would you recommend those boas for a 1st?! time snake keeper? even if I could provide proper environment?

I've had a few Argentines. Their care is pretty much identical to BCIs. They're easy to care for, and usually have good temperaments. They do get quite large, though, so I'd be hesitant to recommend one for a first timer.

Here's a male we sold recently (no female for him, and too many big snakes):

He was 5-6 ft, and still growing like a weed. I've seen some females in the 10 ft range, with monster girth.

LOVE the onyx look of argentines! So basically, work my way up to keeping them OR get someone locally to mentor me on the husbandry? I'm sure the former would be moreso recommended

I would always recommend obtaining experience with large constrictors before running out and buying one. Boas are definitely easier than burms or retics, but still not to be underestimated.

That said - buying a baby and raising it up will give you plenty of experience as your snake grows, and your confidence grows with it.

If you have the space, time, and funds, I don't see any reason why a person could not care for any boa constrictor adequately. If I doubted their suitability as pets, I would not breed them. Plain and simple.

If you want the boa look and feel without the huge size, island locales are great.

Hoggies are great. Especially if you can find a Hogg Island Chair Boa such as this one.

Very nice specimen. I love that absence of "color" with only hues of brown.

He is actually a lot more pale than that. I have a hard time taking pictures of him as without the flash shows him way to dark and with the flash blowas all of the color out of him. He is the hardest boa to get a nice picture of because of his light color and lack of speckling. THanks though
