Im starting to build my new cage and I was wondering where I could get the very small mesh used on reptile cages. Does anyone know? I dont believe Lows has it. Im having it looked for, a special order from a family member who works at a building company, but i know that will be rather or very expensive. Anyone got any suggestions?

Lowe's and Home Depot both have it. It's called window screening!

Make sure you get the aluminum kind of screening. It usually comes in a roll about 2' wide and about 7' long. Screening comes in Nylon, Aluminum and Fiberglass. If you plan on using the screening on a cage holding a animal that eats crickets or the like, they can eat straight through everything except aluminum. I got mine at Menards, but Lowes AND Home Depot should carry it. No need to special order and they only cost about $4 a roll for the aluminum screen!

Yeah Osama, I was gonna add that tidbit about aluminum screening too.

I just bought a 3'x7' roll of aluminum "insect screen" at Home Depot the other night, in fact. It was $4.95 I believe.

Yeah i thought of the alluminum screening but wouldnt that have potential to cut the pads on his feet?

You never described what type of animal you were looking to house.

The aluminum screening is safe, just make sure you tuck the sharp edges out of reach of the animal.

I guess I'm curious to find out what you think the screening is made of on a commercially prepared cage?

Crested Freak, I guess you're housing a gecko of some type, right? Well in case you're wondering how a finished product could look, click this: http://www.alexhuereptiles.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3125

I know what the commercial cages are made of, thats the kind of mesh i was looking for. I have a mesh cage, but i wanted to build my own. But I am housing a crested gecko. I figured the rough metal of an alluminum cage would mess the pads up on his feet. The cage I have is not made out of alluminum but a vynal type mesh.

The link that I posted is a link to a topic I STARTED. The pics don't show it, but there is a young crested gecko inside. Granted that I just modified it's enclosure to include screen sides, I have not observed any odd behavior when she climbs the mesh. If you would like to know how I did it, PM me.

wow, ok i see now. Sorry about that, brain fart. The pictures really filled in a bunch of gaps. Thanks for the info fellas. I just figured that you know, the aluminum would hurt his feet but then again i have to remember that their feet are a bit tough. First time building a cage, wanted to make sure i got everything right. Thanks for your patience. Really shows how much i know abut building a reptile cage. Something so simple and just goes right over my head

You're welcome. I think raw aluminum would probably be sharp enough to cut, but the one I have seems to be anodized, or at least coated with black something.

Mitch, are you building the cage out of a wood frame, with screened sides? Make sure to post pics when you're done!

The aluminum screen comes in MULTIPLE widths and lengths...if you were closer...I have most of a roll of 4 foot in the basement right now I would GIVE you...

The mesh on aluminum screen is actually woven...so shouldn't be a risk of cutting unless you have broken strands...if you have uncovered edges...seal over them with aquarium sealant...it is safe and strong...and will bond the edges to any surface...you can buy the aluminum screen in black as well as raw I believe.

LOL...I can't imagine I need it for anything...it's just taking up space in my basement.
I don't care...if you want it it's yours.

As cheap as it is...probably isn't worth the trip, though...LOL

Going to get the wood today to start making it. Hopefully will finish it today, working on a limited scheduale (work).
