I went ahead and purchased heat rope from Big Apple to give it a try. I hooked it up with a plug in lamp dimmer from that other herp store Wal-mart  and it works great. Total cost to heat three 48 qt sterlite tubs in a rack around $30. The heat rope is easier than tape because there is no wiring to do and because it is a closed circuit I think the chance of fire will be practicly non existent. So far so good .

yeah Derek...I had seen some picks on a site that I cant find anymore....they actually routered out a grove in the shelf so that the rope lays down in it and that way the shelf is still flat for the tubs to sit on.....thats why I would love to see pics of what hes done.
