i was told by a bearded dragon owner that a heat rock is actually reccomended for these reptiles? This is the first reptile i've heard of where it's actually reccomended.. usually they burn themselves.

Nope, heat rocks are not recommended for beardies or any other herp that I know of, for that matter.

Over head lighting/heating works well with dragons. I do not know many keepers that use UTH for dragons.

dont ever use heat rocks. the person that told u that dose not know any thing about reptiles and his animals must be in poor shape.

If I could I would create an organization to ban heat rocks. They are a barbaric invention that was even a bad idea when it first came out and noone truly knew the dangers. you want to heat up a rock put one under your basking lamp.

I agree with everyone else, heat rocks are just far too dangerous. If your inclined to believe they need one, just place a slab of slate or other rock under your heat lamp for them to bask on, which would be more natural anyway.

count me in I lost a baby iguana that way years ago when I was younger and more stupid and beoieved everything people told me.....I actually have a "rock cave" and it is an actual rock not plastic...well its man made rock...it was given to me and evidently it was an ORIGINAL heat rock it had a cord comming out of it...I NEVER used it as such since I didnt trust it..but I cut off the cord and my rat snake loved it when he was little and then my crocodile gecko has it now...its really sort of cool they bask on top or go in the cave when they want to hide.

Sorry, I'm bringing up this old subject, but I just went in to my local exotic pet store to possibly buy something today. Anyway I was looking at a bearded dragon, possibly 2 months old; and was inquiring what he recommended for care. Everything he mentioned, I already had except the UV bulb and the heat rock. HEAT ROCK?! I thought those was a no no. He exclaimed that he was a breeder of beardies, and that anyone who told me otherwise was wrong. He added that if I didn't buy one, he couldn't guarentee that animal. To make matters worse, he wasn't an employee, he was the owner!

sure, you can use a heat rock, just cut the cord off, place in cage. :)

That's what I thought too. I don't think I'd be counting on them to be knowledgeable about the animals they sell.

I have to say heat rocks are GOOD... I've only had one and I used it to keep my coffee heated. I just sat the coffee mug on top, plugged in the rock and I didn't have to keep going back to the microwave all the time to re-heat my coffee!

That owner is clearly trying to pull a con job on you! You should clearly avoid any advice he gives as it is not good advice and just an attempt to con a few extra bucks out of you!

heat rocks are the worst invention ever. At the herp store I work at, we have a mangrove monitor that needed heat, there was no room for a light where he was so we decided to try a brand new heat "ledge" it worked for 3 months than malfunctioned and torched his belly :x . The poor guy made it, but now has a huge scar. I will never ever use a heated anything again. Tell the owner that you want an undertank heat pad. they don't get hot enough to burn and if your worried can be hooked up to a dimmer. What kind of UV did this guy recommend? cause those tube lightss have to be replaced every 6 months and have a effective range of 6 inches or so. I like the mercury vapors, they are expensive but they last longer and have a range of 6 feet, plus they produce heat to. Personally I think the owner is conning you and dosent know what hes talking about!
