I was at a pet store the other day checking out a 7 week old nile they had just brought in. These guys have a policy against selling iguanas because they get too big and "mean." .......yeah.........

So as I reached in and picked up the nile it clamped onto my finger, I figured there was a huge chance it would happen, the cage set up was weird really tall, tons of branches but barely any room on the ground. He was so tiny it was only like a pinch, didn't break skin or even bruise. It just bothered me that when I reached in there all the employees stepped back a few and seemed suprised that it nipped me. Makes me wonder if they're really qualified to sell anything.

Wow thats pretty messed up..Considering the fact that Nile's get far more agressive then Iguana's...I had a 4' Nile that was calm until he got bigger then he was all piss and vinigar..lol...Also had a Iguana about the same size and it was the totall opposite..Nippy as young and semi calm as adult..But niles are far more agressive and for them not to sell iguanas for that reason but sell niles is ignorant......Thats like saying..Well we dont sell burmese pythons do to there size..buttttt we do have this
green anaconda for sale..lol..

At least the shop could tell you that they don't sell iguanas because of their complex care needs. All a nile monitor needs is a big cage, lots of food, a big water dish and a hot spot.

Just throw them in a big cage, give them a hot light and feed them.
That's what kills hundreds on monitors every year.
The cage has to built right to hold humidity and and a variance in temps.
It also needs the proper substrate to dig in, strong branches to climb on and yes a large water dish.
You also have to be careful what you feed and how much.
I hear all the time about people feeding dog and catfood to thier monitors. They also feed it steak, hamburger, stewmeat, ect. ect.
I am currently rehabbing a blackthroat that was fed only catfood, newspaper for substrate, not heat source, just all around bad husbandry.
Since fluffy has come here he/she has doubled in size in 4 months due to proper husbandry and food.
Sorry for the long rant, but I hope you get my point.
