i got a sav the other day from a friend that works at a pet store. no one would buy the little guy and he needs a bit of work. he has what i would call a little temper she called me to take it becouse she nose i deal with bad tempered animals afrocks. snapping turtles, anacondas so this lil guy should not be a big problem for me he only about 6 inches long so i got some size on him.

Congratulations CrazyCody!
If you need help, I own one, Scott owns two and Bayou hasn't got enough fingers and toes to count them all...Anything you'd like to know, just ask. I'm glad we're getting a few monitor people over here, let's liven this place up a bit.
Mark
CONRATS on you new baby!
It makes me happy to hear that there are some people out there that are willing to take a fiesty animal and give it a good home when no one esle will.

Monitors are like snakes, they soon become addictive....I'm just waiting to get the enclosures ready LOL They're great lizards to own!

i have had monitors in the past. they were big and nasty and hard to work with but i did calm them down. monitors can de addicting but i know my limits and one is enough for me at the moment. i dont really have the space for large lizards. a 12 foot retic needs less space then a 6 foot monitor. im ok with my one little monitor at the moment. i will try and just stay with one monitor.

I really want to get a savannah monitor but my dad thinks they are too violent. I am good at convincing and telling him the facts and he knows that I am very good with animals, even little meanies. He saw one eat an adult mouse, and while I thought, "Good lord, that is my next herp." he was most likely thinking, "Gosh, that thing just tears that mouse up and will do the same to me." I'll get one eventually though, I just have to do a lot of studying and cage building.

if u get a young one u can work with them. try and show ur father them. if u can go to a local breeder or a show were they will have adults to show size and temperment. also they should be feed f/t rodents as with snakes. some people feed there monitors live pray and its dangerious for the both of them.

u really got a good point there. a rock python is much more aggressive and tend to be a bit bigger by about 20 feet or so.

Sandfiredrake, your father thinks savs are too violent? What did he think of the Afrock?
I wionder that too, atleast a Sav can't kill and consume a human. :?

LOL. Well, you know how parents can be. One time seeing a nice lizard (sav) eating and it happens to be a violent eater (it seems extremely violent compared to a beardie), and they don't want one. I will get one though, maybe at the Daytona Reptile show this weekend. :wink: Do you guys have any good suggestions on what to pick out and what to look for?
Btw - I am not going to keep the Afrock at 20 somethin feet. I will prolly sell her at about 8-10 feet since they start getting lethal at that length.
Anyway, any suggestions?

Hmmmm, well you stupid... just kidding, I didn't take any offense. Well, you are right. I should start looking for a good home for her right now. Btw - I do know LOTS of breeders where I live that would take her for breeding purposes (breeding for temperment, because she has an awesome personality), but I should really start looking now. Whitehorse, what is the size cage that you house your sav in? How big is your sav now?
Btw - I appreciate your concern and help. Thank you.

if u cant keep the animal its whole life dont get the animal. if you know about rock pythons then you should know they get 8-12 feet in there first year of life like burms in retics. i see baby afrocks for sale at 10 dollars each and people still cant sell them becouse of there size and temper. if u can not keep the animal for its whole life dont get the animal. i tell this to everyone who wants to get any animal. my advice is dont get the monitor if u cant keep the snake for its whole life. a adult sav will need more space then the afrock and it might not kill u but can do some damage if it wanted too.

Sandfiredrake,
Thanks for taking it in a dignified manner, we both now it's not too common...Well about the Afrock, let's just hope the breeders really want them....
As for savannah monitors, let's begin with a few facts:
- The can grow up to 4 feet in captivity, though the average would be 3 to 3 1/2 feet;
- You've seen a sav eat, right? Did you see how they knock down and chew their prey to tenderize the meat? Well, that meat could be your hand...They have a powerful jaw -they'll let go when they let you go, not before- and an adult bite will probably require a vist to the doctor for a few stitches...Then there's all that bacteria...
- They have strong claws, which can draw blood;
- Being whipped by an adult sav's tail is not an enjoyable experience;
- They need a BIG enclosure. I'd say that 8' by 4' by 4' is a minimum;
- That same BIG enclosure will need to be heated, and these little guys like it hot;
- Any idea how much you will have to spend on food? Like a thousand crickets and two dozen pinkies for a juvenile, a month?
- Your sav will most probably WC (wild caught) that needs to be treated for parasites by a qualified vet;
- It is said that a well-kept sav can live over 25 years.
To answer your question, I house mine in a 55 gallon right now, he's only 10.6" long. And I'm just about to start building a larger enclosure. To give you an idea, I've owned it for a little over two months and it has already doubled its length and quadrupled its weight. The savannah monitor is a fascinating lizard but one that needs deep consideration.
I hope this helps,
Mark
