View Full Version : Great.. problem with my crawl cay boa

I'm having a weird issue with my male Crawl Cay Boa. I've only had him since September and he's been fine until yesterday.

He hasn't been eating for the past 3 weeks, and I went to try to feed him again tonight, left the mouse in with him a few moments (have only gotten him to eat live lately) and then I noticed he was upside down! I immediately took the mouse out as well as his water dish and put him in my quarantine room. When he's not moving, he looks perfectly normal, but when he goes to move, his head cranes off to one side and he spins it around upside down. His tail waves around in the air like he's trying to grab something. His tongue doesn't seem to be working well, sometimes it flicks out, other times it just sits out. He doesn't seem aware of much when that happens. He has not been regurgitating, has been shedding fine, no weight loss, and when placed on his back, he rights himself immediately. There are no pest strips in my room, or other chemicals-and all the other babies on the same rack as this one are fine. He made it through last night, but still does the twisting thing with his head. I last tried to feed him about 3 days ago, and he killed his mouse, but didn't eat it.

Unfortunately I can't make it to my vet today-we got 10 inches of snow dumped on us last night and they closed the roads.

Every other snake I own seems to be ok so far. This really sucks, as he's one of my more expensive snakes. His sibling, a female, is twice as large as he is, and seems to be fine.

that sounds like a VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM.....I hate to say this...but it sounds like IBD.

Its a very serious disease that needs immediate attention and quarantine, DO NOT keep the poor little guy around any other boids as its a very contagious disease. If you handle the little guy, make sure to wash your hands with a good antibacterial soap.

If you need more info...call me!

He's been in quarantine since he started acting weird. He was in a rack system with other snakes-but none of them seem to have this. I spoke to a couple people last night locally who have dealt with IBD and its actually sounding like he had a seizure or stroke!

His sibling is fine, she's following me when I open her box. The others are all warming up over their heat pads.

Thing that is weird is, where could he have gotten it from? I wash my hands between handling snakes, and none of my others are showing any symptoms.

I'm starting to hate this snow-we can't get anywhere today, and my vets office is closed due to this weather. :(

Hey Cat....
please keep us updated when you get the little guy to the vet.

I sure will. So far, he hasn't gotten any worse. I've gotten a few suggestions that he may have overheated, but I checked his temps-they are the same as my other baby boas.

I've also gotten a suggestion that it could be an inherited defect. Regardless, I spoke with the breeder, who said he would replace him with one of his 2004 males (for a discount) if something was indeed wrong with him.

Hey Cat, this is Hardrock. I'm guessing this is Dizzy, the one you gave me?

If he is, there's an update on the Herpers LJ (http://www.livejournal.com/community/herpers/547073.html). Looks like he's going to do well, and be a real beauty.

edited to add:
I sincerely hope it's not an inherited defect, since I'd like to breed him. I don't think it is. If it had been, i think it most likely would have manifested sooner.
