What do you use for substrate and why?

I am using newspaper right now because I get it for free. It is easy to clean up and quick and easy to change.

When I don't use newspaper I use blue paper towqels. They are also simple to use though a bit pricey. Like $3 for a roll.

Depends on the critter-
We currently use shredded Aspen, Sani-chips, corrugated paper and paper towels amongst the menagerie here at SNSnake emporium.

Hugo has ceramic tiles in his viv ..with enough play sand in between them, to prevent slippin' and slidin' and possibly pinching a toe when he's being goofy and rambunctious.

The tiles wipe clean easily.. and they represent the hard packed earth that he would be on his natural environment. They also keep pedicures and frequency down some..

I like to use coconut mulches in varying degrees of coarseness (depending of the size of the critter) for most of my set ups, although I switched the BTS and BCI to aspen shavings recently. As long as I keep the mulch fine enough for digestion I don't have to worry about impaction.
