Thank you Scott!
We adore these two little Rubber Boas!
No names yet but we are working on it...
I thought I would have to wait a couple years to find one of these great little snakes so I feel like I hit the lottery:dance:

Thanks...they are worth 100 times their weight in gold;)
Still working on names...so far everything from Thimble to Snuggles is on the list.

By the way...about what age are they considered 'full grown'?
Is it at about 4 years or so?

Thanks again!

Snuggles??? :scared: Noooooooooo...lol!!! Yeah, 3-4 years is adulthood. Those guys are already 1 year, but were brumated...so 4 years sounds about right.

Hehehe...that's what our oldest said too.

Great, thanks for the information!!!

I'll keep you updated if they can agree on names over here...it usually takes a couple weeks:)

Have to give an update..
The 2 Boas (still un-named) made their first appearance at the local 3M Science Weekend. Where the Herp Society had a 'hands on' table.

They were a huge hit:dance:
...it was great to have such sweet little snakes available for people who would normally not go near a snake.
The people there were especially excited to learn they can be found right here in the USA.

They are also easy to feed.
I put them in their respecitve deli containers with 2 small pinkies each.
A half hour later they had eaten everything up!
So they are busy digesting...yay!

Our oldest came up with Firestone and Goodyear for name suggestions...get it...rubber boas...tires...gotta love the sense of humor.

Thanks again:)

Goodyear and Firestone? Much better than Snuggles :scared:. How about Dunlop and Michelin? Goodrich? Cooper? General? Yokohama...no wait, that not a USA tire....LOL.

TOYO or KUMO? Not USA tires but we use them on the US off road tracks....
I had gotten a very bitey corn snake from a guy that he named fluffy. She was evil I tell ya.

Well, I HIGHLY recommend them.:tea:
It is really nice not having to mess with the heat pads etc. They are on the SaniChips, with a water bowl, humid hide and a piece of 4" tile so they can get their sheds started on something.
They are cute, gentle, and easy to care for and these two are great eaters so far...

From what I have read they can be stinkers in the eating department...but so far so good...and you just have to remember snakes are not people...regular food is not in their genetic makeup.

That they can be stinkers to start eating is why you have to get established eaters from a breeder. Scott's took awhile to get going, but are doing great - otherwise he never would offer them to you. Most new babies can be brumated right away and will pick up eating in March. Yes, some can go a year without ever having a meal - then make up for lost time.

Yay!!!

The boys finally agreed on names for these little ones...

(which by the way we have nicknamed Rubber Piggies...they have not missed a meal and the last meal this week they ate 3 small pinks and then snuggled under their substrate for a nap:tea:)

Anyway, the official names are....drumroll...

"Bungee" and "Sling Shot"...

They really wanted to try to come up with names relating to rubber products:D

Thanks again Scott...they are not only popular here but also at the Herp Society education events.

http://www.californiaherps.com/snakes/pages/c.bottae.html

*They are 12-36 inches as adults (males are MUCH smaller than females)
*Heat is their enemy...while they can handle night time drops in temps they apparently do not do well at 85*F +...low 70-low80s is ideal.
*They raid rodent nests in the wild and tend to eat multiple smaller meals rather than one large item.
*They can be hard to get feeding (thus you need to go through a great breeder like Scott to get great little ones:))

*they are a snake that does not need 'work' to get used to handling...like some other snakes that are likely to try to flee or bite...
These guys seem to relish a gentle, warm human and will wrap around your finger etc and hang out as long as you let them:)

If I could only have one snake, this would be it...
We have Ball Pythons, Nic Dwarf Boa, corn snakes, Kenyan Sand Boa, and have had a Hoggie in the past.

Maximum size is about 30"...maybe. 18 to 24" is the norm. Their care is pretty simple. They like it cool, so don't need any additional heat...room temps are fine (72-75). The exception would be gravid females...they need a heat source around 80-85 degrees. Keep them on aspen so they can burrow (they are fossorial) with a large water bowl for them to soak in. You can also put in a humid hide as they like higher humidity (but cool). Feed them once a week...pinks up to hopper mice...2-6 at a time, depending on how hungry they are. They will gorge themselves and then sometimes not eat again for weeks. Juvies and adults usually are problem free. Babies tend to be real buttheads to get feeding, but once started are ok.

Ooops! I meant to type 12-24 inches...
But it looks like Scott already corrected it:)

Hey Scott, do you know which 'locale' you have?
Their coloring seems to be all over the place in pictures online.

Will our little guys color get darker, lighter as they age?

Very interesting. Thanks.
I may just have to get me one or two of those some day.

Hmmmm, well with your pair I have no idea about the locale of the parents (they're CB). My other set of rubbers were (I believe) wild caughts and I think they came from Idaho. They're protected in CA, WA and maybe OR too.

Yeah, I've seen them ranging from a light tan to dark brown to olive green! Your guys will probably stay the same color they are now...maybe lighten up a little as their mom is a light tan in color.

It will be fun to watch them grow...
And maybe figure out if they are boys or girls or one of each...they are pretty even now in size...

The more I hear about them the more I want a pair.

I really would like to get some next spring. Are they readily available or is it best to let a breeder know you are going to be wanting them cause I don't see many of them for sale?

I prefer not to have to have them shipped and would like to find someone local...

They're out there, you just have to look. I thought I saw some for sale on Kingsnake last week. Not too many people breeding them. The 2 most important questions to ask a breeder are...1) Are they eating? 2) Are they captive born? CB babies will give you less problems than wildcaughts. Shipping rubber boas isn't a problem because they are very cold tolerant.

I should have some babies next summer. They're usually born in late July/early August but don't start feeding well until late Sep...if I'm lucky...lol.

Which reminds me...Ken, don't be so quick to feed off any baby rubber boas you get from breeding the ones Kare sold you...they take a while to get going. :eusa_naughty:

Other Scott,

Thanks for the info.

I trust people on this forum way more than strangers over the internet. I would rather wait and buy from someone here than get something "iffy" now. Instant gratification may be great to some people, but when it comes to animals I'd rather get good healthy creatures at a later date.

If I find them from someone I know at a show I'll get them, but other than that I'll wait till next fall and buy from a forum member.

With as small as they are I'll probably get two pairs from different people and try my hand at breeding and raising them. They sure don't take as much space as colombians..

So cute...So small...Wait...what do they eat? owO;;

kare
10-30-2008, 10:27 AM
babies eat xs pink mice
adult males eat fuzzy/weanling mice
adult females can have small mice

all the ones we raise eat frozen/thawed before being sold, unless another agreement/arrangement has been made
