As we all know, Bonnie and Clyde have desided to start a family. So I figured they could use a new house and some fancy furniture to go with it.

They house...And furnishings

Thanks, Now just to keep the plants alive....

AneesasMuse

That looks really nice! :D I'm sure they love having some foliage to hang out in, too! And it's easy to keep those choices (plants) alive ..don't over water, don't under water ...just feel the soil and it should feel barely moist when you stick your finger down into it. The daily misting of Bonnie and Clyde will offer plenty of moisture in between watering ..and their little poopies will be great plant food! :thumb:

You could plant out the whole tank ...with hydroton on bottom, for drainage ..and some coco fiber about 4" deep over it.... the plants will soon fill in and begin to vine, so you can tack them up with suction cup hooks and so on.

Their new place has a lot of potential! Let me know if I can help with any of the aqua-culture or plain ol' planting and plant care :D

Thanks everyone.

Aminah, I will probably need help with it, so thanks. Are there plants that I can put in with the beardies too? That would be cool. Maybe some aloe?

snowliz
07-16-2008, 04:16 PM
Oh, I almost forgot. I want to plant them in the tank without the plant dishes. What should I use for soil? Do you think that would be a problem?

AneesasMuse
07-16-2008, 04:32 PM
I wouldn't put any plants with the Beardies ..not even fake ones ....cuz they'll eat anything!! :p

I use hydroton balls for a drainage system ..about two or three inches worth... with coco fiber mat over it, to keep the soil or loose coco fiber from mixing and falling through... then I add about 3 or 4 inches of coco fiber, and plant directly into it. You can also use good, organic top soil or potting soil without any perlite bits (you don't want them eating perlite ..bad news). I like the coco fiber cuz it doesn't usually grow any funky 'shrooms or other weird things (ie., mold, fungi, etc.) ..and if you go to a hydroponics shop, you can get a HUGE brick (that you rehydrate, soak) for $13 or so ...enough to do several 20 -30 gallon sized vivs.

You can also fill in the space with the hydroton balls with water ..slip an airstone on some tubing and stick it down in the water, through a small slit or hole in the coco fiber mat ..add the soil... connect the tubing to an air pump and VOILA! ..aqua culture! Your plants will be very happy ..and your geckos will have a new source of humidity :icon_winkle:

I will have to go to the local garden center and see what they have for me to use. They are always willing to order stuff also. I now wish I had a bigger tank for them....lol
This could become addicting. I would like to plant some sort of a groung cover in there too. Any suggestions?

You know those really cool looking catus with the long spikes that aren't sharp but discourage people from messing with them, well I have had beardies eat them, you could almost see the pain in there eyes as they were chomping away on them....I have tried the planted tanks but there is no way to do it with beardies at least for me...spent more time trying to fix it all the time...a large log for a perch and lights...LOL

The cage looks good let me know how they do once they get to lovin' in it...my pair of cresties were going crazy last night so I have a feeling plants would be toast if I had any live in with them...

More than likely you are like me just isolated enough not to be able to get cool things like hydroton balls so if you are find some lava rock, just the medium sized ones work good for drainage....along with the bricks of fiber you can use top soil(not potting or any of the other ones) and make it bioactive with some mealworms and isopods from outside right now...a bit of work but they work well when you have good vented cages like aquariums...less clean up is cool (one day I am going to attempt this with corn snakes even with the humidity to see if it will work, one day like all the other projects...LOL)

snowliz
07-16-2008, 07:13 PM
Thanks Jeff, I can get the lava rock easy enough. I will skip the plants in the beardies. I have it set up with drift wood and hides anyway. I would like to try it with the corns also, but need the space for the tanks. I will keep posting as it goes.

I am going to try earth worms in the soil and a bubbler in the water beneath. Well I will try and do it. i may have to stop and ask for help from time to time.

Do you think the mealworms would be better than earth worms?

snowliz
07-16-2008, 07:15 PM
OHHH. I just thought of something..... I have a 29 tall in the basement that would be awesome with the live plant setup for the cresteds. I will have to go check if it has any cracks. I could put that right on top of my entertainment center. (hurries off to check)

I have African Giant Millipedes in with my Cresteds ..they do some clean up and they like CGD. I've only ever added Isopods, as far as other bugs go ..but you can get some fancy schmancy ones of those, even. They come in Orange! I like Orange :D They also come in varying impressive sizes, too!

Check out the Bug Chick (http://www.bugchick.com) She's always got some cool stuff.

If you need any help or supplies, just let me know. I may have stuff lying around that I can part with (for shipping only) ..or be able to send other things from shops local to me. Don't be shy.

I absolutely LOVE setting up vivs ..especially for the more humid "kids".

snowliz
07-16-2008, 07:48 PM
Thanks, I wouldn't know where to begin as far as bugs go. I will check out the web site and double check before I order.

The bug Chick isn't on line at the moment?

AneesasMuse
07-16-2008, 07:59 PM
Aww man.. sorry.. I didn't check the link before I posted it ..just know it by heart. I went a different route and got this info (http://www.bugchick.com/links.html), and you may be able to find another source for buggies in the Cockroach Forum. I think I'm registered over there ..for use of the caresheets, etc. I'll go check it out in a bit...

Isopods from your backyard are okay ..just do a quarantine of sorts ..to be sure you don't introduce anything wild 'n crazy into your Cresteds' new digs... or onto yourself :eusa_shifty:

What types of millipede are ok? that would be really cool to have some of them in there since I'm going all crazy with the idea....

AneesasMuse
07-16-2008, 08:45 PM
The Giants are good ..they won't fit in their mouths.. are large enough that the Cresteds don't see them as tasty morsels  I think a friend of mine has some kind of Vietnamese one ...it's hot pink.. I'll ask her what it is, for sure.

snowliz
07-16-2008, 09:14 PM
Ephibolus pulchripes Tanzanian Red Foot Millipede would maybe this be it?
Will they try and eat my cresteds?
how hard are they to care for and where to get one or two?

AneesasMuse
07-16-2008, 09:38 PM
I just sent her a message ..and read back through her thread. It's definitely a Vietnamese that she has ..gunmetal grey with pink legs. She didn't give a latin on it, but she may know from her research. I asked about care and living arrangements too ..she has Cresteds.

AneesasMuse
07-17-2008, 04:17 PM
I just got the message from my friend about her pink legged millies ..and she said they were not hardy at all, and died shortly after she got them. That could mean several things.. that I won't go into here :p She's a good herpy Mom, but you never know how advanced someone's knowledge is ..unless you're there watching them..

Anyhoo... try the Giant Africans! I really strongly recommend them ..as I've had Hamam for about 2 years now and she is good n' hardy! She lives with little rambunctious nutzoid Lakota ..if she can withstand that little bugger, she could live with anyone!

I have others, too ..but they have never poo'd on me at will ...or journeyed through the house and returned, to wander over to my foot and let me know they are sorry they escaped and would like to go home now...

I'll look around for some 'pods for you ..either in my organic backyard or another source online somewhere.

Rollie pollies, I have found them when I was walking trails trying to find black bear up in copper harbor....

snowliz
07-17-2008, 11:57 PM
Really. I have never seen them here. So where do I look? Other than in copper harbor. Thats a long drive to look for bugs.

AneesasMuse
07-18-2008, 01:06 AM
If you have a wood pile or decaying, fallen trees ..near compost bins ..anywhere that has some moisture and soil ...and particularly at night (at least, that's when I used to fill shoe boxes with them and bring them in the house ...much to my Mommy's joy :heh: ) ...start there! :D

I see the occasional few going through the garden in back ..so if you have a garden, look around there, too...

They aren't very big ..1/2" or so ..and they will roll up into little balls when you touch them or startle them ..hence the "rolly polly" moniker.

Chandler Rep
07-18-2008, 06:44 AM
Go outside and start flipping rocks....if you don't see any spray it with water and check the next day...normally they are just about everywhere...

snowliz

We had a thunder storm last night so I'm going bug hunting....

What do I feed the bugs when i get them? Besides myself. This buffett is out of order and going out of business......Damg mites.

AneesasMuse
07-18-2008, 01:29 PM
I would scoop some of the poopy substrate out of The Newlyweds' crib ..and put that into the buggy quarantine for them to munch on, for start. I'm drawing a blank as to what they might eat ..isopod/rolly pollies, I mean ...I'll go look!

It wouldn't hurt to try some leafy green stuff and cricket/roach food, I guess. Mine just snack on whatever's tasty in the Cresteds' vivs ...ewww!

FloridaHogs
07-22-2008, 06:05 PM
Feed them fish flakes. They do well on that and eat quite a bit. I had a colony for a period of time that I fed to my scenter toads.

AneesasMuse
07-22-2008, 07:03 PM
That's interesting.. fish flakes, hunh? You could probably get away with feeding them cricket/roach chow then, too. My "special blend" has fish flake, cichlid pellets, pooch and kitteh crumbles (the food, not the animal), Mazuri lab block crumbles ..and non-medicated chick starter (or Fluker's ..or similar... feeder insect food)

I actually had my mom, stepdad, and my son all helping look for sow bugs today. It was quite the time. My son wanted to put ever one in the bucket himself, my stepdad wouldn't touch them, and my mom is disabled and can hardly walk. What a site we were in the woods....lol
Any way I got some bugs. So now what....?

I'd go to the doctor and see if he can get rid of them:p

Wrong bugs. Besides I already did that and it didn't help....lol

AneesasMuse
07-23-2008, 01:07 AM

According to Gina.. grab up some poo from the yard ....oh no, wait ..that's where you FIND them.. hmmm... give them some of The Newlyweds' substrate, preferably "soiled" :pound: I crack myself up! :pound: If you have some roach or cricket food around ..or fish flakes/pellets... cat or dog chow crumbled... all that should be edible for them.

I haven't had a chance to look for any yet, but I haven't forgot! :D

snowliz
07-23-2008, 01:10 AM
Thanks, I figured out the best place to find them is in my moms basement in the wood room. There was some bark in the corner that they seemed to enjoy living in.
So will they reproduce in the habitat and will any of the pets eat them? Like the frogs or cresteds or anything?

snowliz
07-23-2008, 01:11 AM
This reminds me,,,,I have to order crickets tomorrow. It got to hot in here the other day and most of mine died...:(

AneesasMuse
07-23-2008, 01:15 AM
"Some rolly pollies may be harmed in this endeavor.. "

Your Cresteds may be curious at first and try to eat a couple ..but it shouldn't last long. They usually go unnoticed in the vivs ...but I am not certain about the froggy.

One of my frogs was trying to shove my finger in her mouth today ..I think it was Dumplin', too! She's a big'un!

snowliz
07-23-2008, 01:17 AM
Thanks. These little froggys can't fit much of a finger in their mouth but sure do like the crickets... They probably think their in heaven and it is raining food...lol

AneesasMuse
07-23-2008, 01:22 AM
Thunder Thighs and Dumplin' can't fit my finger in their mouth either ..but they sure like to try! It's cute as heck ..the way they frantically try to hurry up and shove anything close by into their itty bitty little mouths!

snowliz
07-23-2008, 02:01 AM
Thats for sure. I am really getting a kick out of our little frogs.... You should see how much fun Joey has with them too. I am glad that we have them.

Chandler Rep
07-23-2008, 07:21 AM
If it moves it will be hunted....if your lucky they will reproduce but I don't think I have ever had them long enough to have that happen....also keep the soil moist but not wet....you can keep a small portion dry where you are feeding them otherwise it will mold FAST....

snowliz
07-23-2008, 05:37 PM
Thanks. I will have to figure out a way to keep some dry. I put some dry flake fish fod in there for them too.

Chandler Rep
07-23-2008, 07:28 PM
If you are just setting them up to isolate them for awhile then just stick a deli cup lid on top of the dirt...once they are in with the geckos then don't feed them at all...

snowliz
07-23-2008, 08:28 PM
Ok. I have them in some top sil and peat moss with a piece of bark in there. I put the fish food on the soil. I will take the bark out and put a deli lid in there. Thanks
