The South American Tri-Color Hognose (Lystrophis Pulcher) is a
GREAT species to have in the collection. This is one species with a
absolutely wonderful "personality". Mild mannered and fairly tame, we've
never had one that tried to strike or bite.
This species definitely has a healthy appetite, we
offer hatchling tri-color babies day old frozen thawed pinkie mice
within 5-7 days of hatch and have never had one refuse on 2 consecutive
occasions. Adults are fed frozen thawed adult mice every 4-5 days.
Hatchlings average 6 inches or so while adults vary from 18-24 inches
with females being the larger. Sexual maturity is reached within 18-24
months although some males may be ready sooner. Females can and are
capable of producing multiple clutches a year, to date our record female
produced 4 clutches with each clutch around 30-35 days apart. Temps. are
kept in the 80-82 degree range ambient and 88-90 on the hotspot.
Humidity is between 50%-70%. We keep all of our Tri color hogs on a
pellet paper product which allows them to burrow and hide under the
substrate.
This is one of my all time favorite snakes to keep and work with. I
would never go without at least a pair in my collection. When we first
started to work with them, there was very very very little info on these
guys. We've now kept and produced many generations of these guys and
everything we've learned has been through trial/error and having a basic
understanding of their natural environment, although we're constantly
learning something everyday...spectacular and fascinating sums up this
species. |
